Our story
SonicCast is eight shows, one studio in Gazi and about fourteen people, most of whom do two jobs. This is how it got here, with the boring parts left in.
What this is
We started as one show and spent four years resisting becoming a company. What changed our minds was practical: eight shows can share an engineer, an ad sales conversation and a lawyer, and none of that requires anybody to sound the same.
The editorial line stays with the host. That is written into every agreement we sign, in a sentence anyone can read without help: the host has the last word on their own show. It has cost us money twice and we would do it again.
The long version
No round numbers and no origin myth. A borrowed room, a decade, and a lot of Sundays.
First light
Two of us, one microphone bought on credit, and a duvet nailed to the wall for the reflections. The first six episodes were recorded on a Sunday because that was the only day the upstairs neighbour was out.
The first show
A hundred listeners does not sound like much until you meet eleven of them at a bar in Exarcheia and they all quote the same episode back at you. That was the week we stopped calling it a hobby.
A door with our name on it
Twenty-two square metres, a floated floor and a landlord who did not ask what a podcast was. We built the traps ourselves over two weekends and got the room quiet enough to hear the fridge two doors down.
In front of people
Sixty seats, all of them taken, and a recording that needed almost no editing because the audience did the timing for us. We have done two nights a month ever since, minus the year nobody could.
The year of the spare room
Eight microphones couriered around Athens with instructions written on the box. The sound was worse and the conversations were better, and two of the shows still on the network started in that period.
A network, not a feed
We stopped being one show with side projects. Shared production, shared ad sales, separate editorial — hosts keep the last word on their own show, which is written down rather than assumed.
Everything, in writing
Every episode, back to the first one, transcribed and searchable. It took four months and it turned out to be the most-visited part of the site, which nobody predicted.
Now
Eight shows, a studio that pays for itself between recordings, and a live night that sells out before we announce the guest. Still small on purpose: everyone who makes something here is in the same room at least once a week.
Where it stands
Counted from the site rather than typed into it. Plays reset on the first of the month, and we do not count a download as a listen.
What we hold to
Come and see
Two live nights a month, a hundred and twenty seats, and a studio you can hire when we are not in it. Both are easier to understand from the inside.
Also on this site
Eight shows, recorded in person. Everything published here is also transcribed.
