The series was supposed to be about ferries. It became about waiting.
That shift came out of the reading, not out of the interviews. By the time we sat down with the first contributor, the running order had already been rearranged twice on the strength of two books.
The two that changed the season
One was a dry account of island supply logistics, written by someone with no interest in metaphor whatsoever. The other was a memoir with almost no verifiable facts in it at all. Between them they framed every question we asked.
